Rest In Peace Sir.
If laughter is the best medicine then Jaspal Bhatti was the best doctor. In a tragic road accident early on Thursday, the man who prescribed a smile to beat the morose of daily life through his satirical television shows left for the heavenly world. He was returning from a promotional event of his upcoming film ‘Power Cut’ which is a satire on the electricity department.
Jaspal Bhatti was unlike any comedian before or after him. His television shows ‘Ulta Pulta’ and ‘Flop Show’ were not mere laugh riots but took potshots on the functioning of various government departments and the inexplicable ways of our society. ‘Flop Show’ in particular was what I believe set the trend of Indian sitcoms.
There cannot be a soul who did not like his style of humor. I was a schoolboy when I first watched ‘Flop Show’ on Doordarshan. He was the actor, writer and director of the immensely popular sitcom. Only 10 episodes of the show were produced but ‘Flop Show’ attained a pedestal which no other comedy TV show ever achieved.
I remember watching every episode of the show. Apart from the superb acting of Jaspal Bhatti and company, I particularly loved the starting credits. The title song of ‘Flop Show’ itself was funny so to say the least. Other than that the starting credits were themselves unusual. For instance, “Directed By” was written “Misdirected By”. The credits matched the title of the show. This showed the innovativeness of Jaspal Bhatti in direction.
There are many comedy shows on television today which at times is nauseating. Most of them fail to evoke that much needed smile on our faces and the laughs, jokes and satires are either repetitive or plain boring. Sometimes it looks like the humor is being forced on us. But Jaspal Bhatti’s acting and his shows were always fresh. He managed to bring out something new each time he appeared on screen be it on reality TV shows as a judge/participant or in films. However, Jaspal Bhatti will be best remembered for the treat-with-a-laughter sitcom ‘Flop Show’.
All of the comedy shows we see today owe a lot to Jaspal Bhatti even if only some of them have an originality of sorts. One such show is ‘Office Office’, the popular sitcom featuring Pankaj Kapur as Musaddilal who does the rounds of various government departments on various issues that bother his daily life.
All of the comedy shows we see today owe a lot to Jaspal Bhatti even if only some of them have an originality of sorts.
Jaspal Bhatti’s shows, aired in the late 80s and early 90s, took on the daily vagaries of life and the endless struggles of the common man with those in power. This was when the word ‘corruption’ was not as widespread as it is today. Jaspal Bhatti struck a chord with the masses by reflecting their problem on a screen many watched. It was also Doordarshan’s prime through which Jaspal Bhatti was able to reach as many people as he could thereby achieving cult status.
Direction and writing were not his only talents. Acting was one of the principal reasons why Jaspal Bhatti was the best doctor of laughter. His style of delivering dialogues was unique. He managed to maintain a straight face even when delivering dialogues laced with humor. This is a significant trait we see in Akshay Kumar’s comedy films. No actor before Jaspal Bhatti delivered comic dialogues without making faces. This does not mean that they were not good; in fact they were brilliant but Jaspal Bhatti was perfect in his own way.
I can feel the silence in the world of comedy with the death of the marvelous Jaspal Bhatti. We hate corruption and we are angry in the manner our governments, both Central and States, function. Perhaps, Jaspal Bhatti hated the system too but he knew a better way to protest, much better than our angry minds can think of. He used satire as a tool to highlight the problems of the common man and we will always love him for that. The ‘Flop Show’ is after all a hit show.

May his soul rest in peace ! :(
